Event Description: Aspen Historical Society’s (AHS) 2018 Time Travel Tuesdays series kicks off tomorrow with the first of four panel events hosted at the Wheeler Opera House. This year’s series, “Aspen to the Olympics: Our Legacy of Youth Sports,” will highlight the histories of local winter-season youth sports organizations and the impacts the clubs have had on the careers and lives of young athletes over several generations. The community is invited to hear stories from across the years of figure skating, ice hockey, skiing and snowboarding in moderated panel discussions with past and present athletes, coaches, parents, and club administrators from: Aspen Skating Club and Revolutions Skating Club Aspen; Aspen Junior Hockey, and Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club. The conversations, supported by historic photos from the AHS collection, will showcase the many services the clubs provide to our children and entire community. In the spirit of the 2018 Winter Olympics, the final panel will feature athletes with connections to Aspen who have represented the United States at the Olympic games. This special panel event, moderated by Chris Davenport, will focus on the Olympians' experiences with sports as kids: how clubs, family, mentors, coaches, and perhaps even the support of a community, shaped the many roads from Aspen to the Olympics. “The Roaring Fork Valley’s alpine geography and climate make the area a perfect training ground for athletes of many disciplines,” said AHS CEO Kelly Murphy. “Thanks to the efforts of many individuals over the years, high-quality youth-sports clubs have developed to support our kids’ athletic endeavors. Aspen Historical Society is honored to showcase these organizations, their athletes, and the community that stands behind them in the 2018 Time Travel Tuesday series.” Aspen's Olympians March 6 | 5:30 pm, Wheeler Opera House Theatre Panelists: Gretchen Bleiler, Beth Madsen, Craig Ward, Chris Klug, Jeremy Abbott, Greg Lewis, additional panelists TBD.
